History
The stunning marble cenotaph showcases the architectural brilliance of the Rajputs. It is believed to have been constructed by famous 19th-century architect Lallu Lal, the same designer behind the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. It was inaugurated by the great Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi.
The Jaswant Thada is a beautiful tourist destination with a view of Mehrangarh Fort in the backdrop. Rare portraits of Jodhpur’s rulers can also be seen at Jaswant Thada. Today, it’s a symbol of Jodhpur’s rich cultural heritage. Its exquisite design and scenic beauty attract countless visitors every year.
The Architecture
Jodhpur, also known as “The Blue City,” is a shelter for a range of important historical landmarks and monuments. The architecture of Jaswant Thada is designed in unique ways using pure white marble. Due to the white marble, this beautiful memorial is often described as the “Taj Mahal of Mewar.” The beautiful domes, elegant arches, stunning detailing, and nearby lake add to the exquisite beauty of this architect. The monument is built in the Rajasthani architecture style with a twist of incredible jali work and striking domes that are uniquely designed and carved. The intricate designs on the walls and ceilings feature designs carved on white marble that are aesthetically pleasing.
The main hall is exclusively built for rituals; it has a huge chandelier and several pillars that are carved with exclusive designs.
The garden is decorated with green grass and colourful flowers; it surrounds the cenotaph and the pond, giving visitors a serene view of nature. Several small cenotaphs are built around the main monument, which are dedicated to the wives of the Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The Jaswant Thada is one of the best examples for showcasing the Marwar’s rich cultural heritage. It has an excellent architectural design that has been adapted to modern times.
